NATIONAL PARK OF MONFRAGÜE


The National Park of Monfragüe is one of the best representations of Mediterranean forest of the Iberian Peninsula. Its impressive quartzitic rocks stand out, which are used every season by many species of birds as a place of reproduction, some as emblematic as the black stork or the peregrine falcon. Its extensive meadows, formed by centenary oaks and cork oaks, give shelter to a good number of mammal species, among which the deer stands out for its abundance, being an interesting destination in early autumn for the observation of the rutting. This endemic environment of the Iberian southwest, serves as a champion zone to the three species of vultures present in Extremadura on a regular basis, boasting one of the largest colonies of black vultures in the world. Other species are also present, among which the great eagles stand out, as well as a good representation of Mediterranean bird species. Monfragüe has a rich historical heritage that includes from the Bronze Age, highlighting its cave paintings, its Arab fortification of the s. IX or the bridge of the Cardinal of the 15th century.
