THE ARROCAMPO RESERVOIR


The Arrocampo reservoir, in the Campo Arañuelo region, is one of the most important wetlands in the region from an ornithological point of view. As a result of the cooling of the reactors at the Almaraz nuclear power plant, the reservoir has a temperature above the average and a constant level throughout the year, something that does not happen in the rest of the reservoirs in the region. This has led to the appearance of large masses of marsh vegetation, a medium used by several birds of scarce distribution in the Iberian Peninsula. In the Arrocampo reservoir, classified as ZEPA (Special Protection Area for Birds), the 8 heron species present in Spain are reproduced, including the rare and sparse bittern or the striking crabeater, as well as other famous species of our wetlands, such as the mustachioed, the purple gallinule, the unicolor or the marsh harrier. In its nearby meadows we can observe various species of Mediterranean birds, among which the blue-winged kestrels, the lesser kestrel, the bee-eater, the spiky sparrow or the Iberian blue-winged ibis.
