The red uproll is possibly the most emblematic bird of the traditional olive groves, with the permission of the owlets. It is a bird of small size and uniformly reddish coloration, in which it stands out its long tail of rusty tone, whose tips show a striking black and white design. It is currently listed as Vulnerable in the Red Book of Birds of Spain, given its steep decline in recent decades. From his coloring and his habit of raising the tail showing the external rectrices in fan (a behavior especially patent during the courtship) comes his name in Castilian, as well as other vernacular, as he receives in some areas of the province of Badajoz; "empinarrabos", "alzarrabo", "arzacola" or "sartanzo" are more descriptive than those collected by Professor Francisco Bernis for the province of Cáceres: "colorín", "rubita", "colirrubía" or "roja" only in the town of Ahigal.


During this activity, focused on the observation of this elusive and discreet bird, we will visit some of the best areas for observation through the traditional olive groves of Montehermoso, delving into its biology and discovering some curiosities of the species and its associated habitat. Montehermoso, in the Alagón Valley region, very close to Plasencia, is possibly the best population of the species in the province of Cáceres. In the last two decades, the intensification of this crop so associated with the southern half of the Iberian Peninsula, has led to an alarming decline in this and other species, making Extremadura one of the most important bastions for its conservation. During our tour we can also observe many other species of birds, highlighting the presence of some as unique as the booted eagle, the collalba rubia, the common shrike, the black stork, the Egyptian vulture or the Iberian ibex.
